Abstract
The purpose of this project is to investigate
the
characters in the
Chinese composer Tan Dun’s
opera
The First Emperor, a two-act opera written in English and
presented by the Metropolitan
Opera in 2006.
It focuses
on
the characters that Tan Dun created in this opera,
particularly
Princess Yueyang, General Wang Bi,
and
Gao Jianli,
and
how
they
come together
to develop the
tragic
and
dramatic effect.
In addition, the project looks in detail at
the character development of
Princess
Yueyang and
the vocal challenges
of
her parts.
Finally, it
explores
Tan Dun’s musical
style in
The First Emperor
within the context of
a
recent
trend in
opera in the
twenty-first
century toward a new operatic style that combines
Chinese traditional musical elements with
Western musical elements.
