Abstract
This study looks at Eun-Hye Kim’s set of twelve piano suites,
Les douze signes, for the
advanced pianist, providing guidance for performances of this large-scale work. To
prepare a better performance, it is necessary to examine Kim’s compositional style and to
analyze the suites. Chapter One introduces the purpose of the study and gives
background information about the suites. Chapter Two contains a thorough biography of
Kim. Chapter Three includes the background of the Eastern zodiac, giving details about
the characteristics of each of the twelve animals upon which the work is based.
It also
provides the analysis including formal structure, harmony, rhythm, texture, timbre, as
well as the place of the composer’s musical language within twentieth-century style.
Chapter Four continues with performance considerations for each movement. As each
piece represents a different character, and also demands great skill to play, this chapter
offers technical suggestions for more effective performance. Moreover, as this work is a
character piece, an interpretation is offered about how to express the musical elements.
The conclusion deals with why this particular work’s issues are important, and how they
might be approached in order to help pianists prepare a successful performance.
