The United States uses approximately 200 billion gallons of fuel annually. The infrastructure to support this fuel use costs $12 trillion. Alternative fuels and biofuels can help alleviate U.S. dependence on limited fossil fuel resources. ISTC researchers have moved beyond ethanol to consider other feedstocks for alternative fuels. These include waste materials like mixed municipal solid waste, plastics, spent tires, and food waste, as well as biomass like sustainably procured crop residues, biomass crops, timber and forestry residues, green waste, and algae.
