- Abstract
- Self-efficacy as a global personality construct was examined and contrasted with domain-specific conceptualizations of self- efficacy. Generalized self-efficacy, defined as individuals' expectations for personal mastery and competence across life domains, was assessed via a 25-item instrument that was developed for this study. The scale was compared to another measure, also developed for this study, that assesses efficacy expectations across 10 goals or domains. An alternative index of generalized efficacy was derived from the second measure by averaging individuals' efficacy across goals. The psychometric properties of the 25-item scale were assessed, and construct validation data were presented. The relations between the two measures of generalized efficacy and other theoretically-relevant constructs were explored, and practical support was obtained for conceptualizations of generalized self-efficacy as a psychological construct. Data regarding the relations between self-efficacy and cognitive and affective measures of subjective well-being were also presented. As hypothesized, the relation between self-efficacy for particular goals and subjective well-being was mediated by goal importance. Discussion focuses on the utility of conceptualizing self-efficacy as a generalized personality trait, measurement issues, gender differences in mean levels and factor structure, and the relation between self-efficacy and subjective well-being
