Abstract
Jazz piano students spend most of their time practicing improvisation.
However, in a
performance situation, between 80
and 90% of the time, the
jazz pianist is responsible for
accompanying melodies and solos.
Furthermore,
convincing jazz pianists have the ability to
think
melodically
when comping. Yet,
the
scholarly
literature regarding jazz comping is
limited to
mainly information about chord voicings.
This project
will extend further to analyze Mulgrew Miller’s comping in terms of
voicings, but also by focusing
on relevant aspects of his work
such as harmonic rhythm, his
interaction with the soloist and
the rhythm section,
and how all of this relates to the
melody.
To this end, the document will meticulously analyze seven different tunes and
provide support in the form of information extracted from three interviews with masters in
the field. The intention of this
project is to generate scholarly documentation that will
help
current and future jazz students understand the process of jazz comping. My hope is that
this final project will be published, as no such work on Mulgrew Miller currently exists.
