Abstract
Based on my experience
conducting
Benjamin
Britten’s opera
A Midsummer Night’s
Dream
at the University of Illinois
in
a production directed by Christopher Gillett,
this paper
is
designed as a guide
to assist
other conductors who
approach this masterpiece.
Its main focus
is to provide advice
from both technical and musical points of view
on
how to handle selected
challenging
passages of
the
opera in rehearsal and performance.
The
discussion
of these
passages
is
organized
by acts
in the chronological order of the piece.
The paper
also
considers
the relationship between the pit and the stage
from the perspective of the conductor.
