Abstract

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is not only known for its academic reputation, but for its wide array of social opportunities for students. The city of Champaign allows nineteen year olds to enter bars, and the campus boasts the largest Greek life system in the country, creating what appears to be endless social opportunities. In recent years, UIUC has been ranked a top party school, and the number one party school for the 2015-2016 school year by the Princeton Review, only adding to an already sound reputation. While most students apply to college with a focus on their higher education, this paper explores the interests of students who considered the social life and party reputation when applying to the University. The findings show that the social life and party reputation were both considered in part for some small groups of students, while academics still remained the number one reason for enrolling. Many students were in fact unaware of the reputation until they spent their first week on campus, and referred to the avid social life as an “added bonus” according to the students interviewed. If anything, Greek life, the bars, and party expectations at the university has attracted some students, but those not affiliated with Greek life as a whole were not attracted by social life as highly when deciding whether to attend the University of Illinois.
