Abstract
This research focuses on two topics. The first topic is the simplification of
point clouds. The simplification algorithm developed for this project is based on Quadric
Edge Collapse Decimation (QECD). It uses Building Information Models
(BIMs) as semantic priors to help simplify point clouds and can achieve better
planar simplification and detail preservation than traditional algorithms.
The second topic is the alignment of point clouds to BIMs. The tool developed is a semi-supervised tool, which allows users to select point matches
between corresponding point clouds and BIMs, and it aligns point clouds to
BIMs accurately within minimal time.
