Abstract
While it has been exploited extensively since the invention of the pencil over 400 years ago, graphene is,
by itself a relatively new material. Since its isolation in 2004, the 2D material we call graphene has been
studied extensively and is known for its wide variety of properties ranging from its good electrical
conductivity to its mechanical flexibility. Similarly, the capacitor has been around for well over 200 years
in the form of the Leyden jar. The introduction of various nanofabrication technologies over the past few
decades, however, has allowed the development of ever more miniaturized and portable electronics,
including passive devices like capacitors. As modern society becomes increasingly reliant on
interconnected mobile technologies, the question of suitable energy storage methods persists. The aim of
this study is to investigate the integration of graphene into 3D structures as a blueprint for high-performance
capacitors as future energy storage devices, that are not only monolithically producible with
conventional semiconductor fabrication technologies, but are also scalable to wafer dimensions.
