Abstract
This research intends to achieve a high-resolution data conversion with low-cost and small-area technologies for temperature sensor applications. In order to obtain high-resolution data from frequency-based temperature sensors with a low-cost and small-area implementation, a delta-sigma frequency discriminator technique is used to replace the traditional analog-to-digital converter approach to convert analog signals from dual oscillators. While some conventional analog-to-digital converters convert the amplitude of incoming signals, discriminators modulate incoming frequency and are therefore suitable for this type of application. This research uses Verilog-AMS to implement a first-order discriminator using a DMD (dual modulus frequency divider) and a D flip-flop. An output frequency with high resolution can be obtained by oversampling and decimating an output bit steam from the discriminator. This low-cost technique presents an accurate frequency conversion while it may present a relatively high quantization noise with a first-order implementation. The simulation results and detailed analysis will be addressed in this thesis.
