Abstract
Electric drive design is one of the major aspects in the electric transportation technology. This thesis describes the design and testing of a 750 W three-phase inverter for testing the control algorithm for a high-speed, high-frequency 1 MW motor.
A general introduction to three-phase inverters, switching schemes and various topologies is given and reasoning for the selection of the conventional hex-bridge voltage source inverter (VSI) is provided. Further, the thesis provides a rationale for the selection of the switching device for the hex-bridge. The designs of the pre-charge circuit, bootstrap circuit, short-circuit protection and PWM overlap protection circuit are also provided. The hardware testing of the inverter with a purely resistive load was completed and the results and the challenges faced are discussed.
