Abstract
This thesis describes the design and implementation of the Database module in a novel Cloud-based Open Lab for Data Science (COLDS) system. COLDS is a general infrastructure system to support data science programming assignments on the cloud that is currently being developed at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The Annotation Subsystem of COLDS is responsible for allowing instructors to design and to distribute annotation tasks, and allowing annotators to annotate searched documents. The function of the Database module includes providing database schema and relations for the Annotation Subsystem. It connects to both Annotation module and Search module. The thesis describes the design and implementation of the Database module, including Annotation Subsystem’s background, challenges, choice of database, schema design, implementation detail, and sample application scenarios.
